About the position

The Custodian position at Reading Public Schools is responsible for maintaining the district's buildings in a state of operating excellence to ensure no interruptions to the educational program. This role involves a variety of cleaning and maintenance tasks, as well as assisting the public and ensuring the security of the facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans and preserves designated spaces and equipment in the building.
  • Assists visiting public utilizing the facilities with directions and equipment setup.
  • Opens building and performs building checks to ensure entrances are secure.
  • Maintains building and grounds security during school days.
  • Handles milk and bread deliveries as needed.
  • Dry-mops and vacuums classrooms and offices; wet-mops as needed.
  • Cleans and disinfects lavatories.
  • Re-stocks paper towel, toilet paper, and soap dispensers; provides inventory usage data.
  • Cleans glass and dust in assigned areas; disinfects and polishes water fountains.
  • Picks up trash and sweeps outside entrances.
  • Sets up cafeteria for lunches and empties trash between lunches.
  • Washes cafeteria and kitchen floors as scheduled.
  • Closes building and performs building checks at the end of the day.
  • Removes snow and spreads ice-melt for safe entrance and egress.
  • Performs heavy cleaning during school and summer vacations as directed.
  • Safely operates Town and School vehicles while observing legal and defensive driving practices.

Requirements

  • Ability to read and comprehend documents such as memos and safety rules.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly in written and oral communication.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of district requirements and Board of Education policies.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Class D Driver's License and satisfactory driving record.
