About the position

The Cleaner at Stony Brook Medicine is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in the Health Sciences Center and surrounding areas. This role involves various cleaning tasks, including washing floors, collecting medical waste, and ensuring that all areas are sanitized to prevent the spread of infection. The position requires strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with all levels of the organization.

Responsibilities

• Wash floors, corridors, stairs, and stairwells using mops, brushes, and detergents.
• Collect, transport, and dispose of medical waste or spoiled linens according to procedures.
• Strip and wax floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets; dust assigned areas.
• Clean and scrub lavatories and locker rooms, including sinks, toilets, and showers.
• Polish furniture, metal fixtures, and equipment.
• Remove hazardous articles from floors and furniture and place them in designated receptacles.
• Move furniture and equipment for cleaning activities or event setups.
• Change curtains and drapes; hang pictures and decorative objects.
• Empty trash, recyclables, and waste according to the cleaning schedule.
• Assemble cleaning cart and mix cleaning solutions as per manufacturer directions.
• Wear appropriate protective clothing and equipment as required.
• Check supplies and equipment functionality, notifying the supervisor of low supplies or malfunctions.
• May be assigned to remove snow, clean sidewalks, and mow lawns.
• May be assigned to high-cleanliness areas like laboratories and operating rooms.

• Must be physically able to perform the tasks of the position.
• Effective communication skills to obtain and convey information.

Benefits

• Competitive salary range of $33,408 - $37,383 per year.
• Full-time position with variable shifts and every other weekend pass days.
