About the position

Volt is immediately hiring a CNC Mill Set Up Machinist in Poway, CA. This position is responsible for preparing all activities to set up a variety of milling machines (3-5 axis) to produce precision parts and tools from metal or plastic to meet customer expectations for quality and on-time delivery. The CNC Mill Set Up Machinist will set up, program, and operate all 3, 5 axis and vertical CNC machining equipment utilizing a wide range of controls. The role requires performing job set-up using traditional clamping methods, vices, and custom work holding fixtures, as well as reading and interpreting blueprints to maintain dimensions within tolerances of precision machined parts. In this position, the machinist will monitor machining processes and adjust setups as needed, completing documentation as required by assigned tasks. The machinist will accurately utilize precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, dial indicators, height gauges, pin gauges, and gauge blocks. Collaboration with leads and operators is essential to ensure high quality of parts by closely monitoring and adjusting the operation of machines and/or tooling while regularly inspecting parts for conformance to requirements. The machinist will also be responsible for detecting and correcting minor malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, troubleshooting and resolving all machine operation issues with assistance from Programming, Engineering, and Maintenance. Daily communication with Supervisors, leads, and other employees is expected, along with working with Engineering to develop work instructions for developmental jobs. The machinist will work with the Tool Crib Attendant, Engineering, and Maintenance to maintain machine-specific tools and consumables to ensure effective operation of equipment. Time management is crucial to meet routed cycle and set-up times on all work orders. The machinist will also collaborate with leads and operators to perform equipment preventive maintenance and clean the work area to promote efficient workflow and a safe working environment. The ideal candidate will be able to perform all setups (basic and advanced) and provide training to other operators while maintaining a high standard of quality work within the organization's environmental, health, and safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Set up, program, and operate all 3, 5 axis and vertical CNC machining equipment utilizing a wide range of controls.
  • Perform job set-up using traditional clamping methods, vices, and custom work holding fixtures.
  • Read and interpret blueprints to maintain dimensions within tolerances of precision machined parts.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in setting up and operating CNC machines using solid models and drawings to produce tight tolerance parts from metal or plastic.
  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent work experience.
  • Computer skills required and familiarity with Computer Numerical Control (CNC) software and machinery used for computer-aided manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of how to operate grinders, lathes, and milling machines.
  • Ability to read all views of blueprints and Datum call outs, process documentation, and inspection measuring devices.
  • Math skills to take precise measurements and make calculations.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills to identify/correct/troubleshoot production issues.
  • Ability to write a simple program (Vise Jaws, tap holes, pin stopped hole).
  • Consistently achieve defined productivity level on all products processed.
  • Ability to do a vacuum, 4th axis Trunnion, and 5th axis machine setup.
  • Ability to program and build own fixture to setup complex parts and maintain tight true position.
