About the position

The Afterschool Junior Counselor at the YMCA of Greater Birmingham is a part-time role focused on providing a safe and engaging environment for children in afterschool programs. The position emphasizes youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, requiring counselors to actively participate in activities, monitor behavior, and serve as positive role models. Counselors will work under the supervision of an Afterschool Counselor and are expected to be available 3-5 days a week during the afternoon hours.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise children at all times, prioritizing their safety and following risk management policies.
  • Encourage participation of all students in daily activities and events.
  • Attend staff meetings, mandatory training, and other YMCA events as required.
  • Care for all facilities, equipment, and supplies used in the program.
  • Provide opportunities for youth development in line with YMCA values.
  • Communicate incidents involving children's behavior to co-workers and supervisors.
  • Follow YMCA policies and procedures diligently.
  • Prepare and maintain necessary supplies for activities.
  • Arrive to work on time, dressed appropriately, and ready to work.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Successful completion of background and Child Abuse & Neglect screening.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification (training provided if needed).
  • Availability for 3-5 afternoons per week from 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM.
  • Willingness to engage in fun and play at work.
  • Attendance at regular in-service training and completion of required online training.
