The Industrial Plant Carpenter/Laborer position involves performing skilled carpentry work in the maintenance and repair of buildings and facilities. The role requires the individual to cut, shape, and assemble wooden articles, as well as set up and operate various woodworking machines, including power saws, jointers, and mortisers. These tasks are essential for surfacing, cutting, or shaping lumber and fabricating parts for wood products. The carpenter will be responsible for constructing, erecting, installing, and repairing structures and fixtures made of wood, plywood, and wallboard, utilizing both hand tools and power tools while adhering to local building codes. In addition to the physical carpentry work, the position requires reading and interpreting blueprints, sketches, or building plans to determine the type of materials needed, such as lumber or fiberboard, and the dimensions of the structures or fixtures to be fabricated. Safety is a priority, and all work must be performed in accordance with established safety procedures. The carpenter will also be responsible for estimating time and material costs for carpentry projects and requisitioning new materials and equipment as necessary. The role may involve welding metal parts to steel structural members and could include specialization in finish carpentry, which encompasses tasks such as installing interior and exterior trim, building stairs, and laying hardwood floors. Additional responsibilities may include removing and replacing sections of structures prior to and after the installation of insulating materials, remodeling and repairing cabinets, counters, shelves, tables, and miscellaneous furniture, as well as replacing and repairing door closures and locks. The carpenter will perform their work under general supervision and typically report to a supervisor or manager.
