About the position

The Motor Equipment Operator position within the Facilities Department is a critical role responsible for the safe and efficient operation of various types of motor equipment and vehicles. This position requires the operator to drive and operate both small and large trucks, as well as at least one of the following specialized equipment: loader, packer, Link belt, roller, plow, backhoe, sweeper, Vactor, root cutter, compressor, or Drott. The operator will also engage in a variety of manual labor tasks, which are essential for maintaining public works activities. The role is supervised by a Foreman or another senior-level employee, and the operator may occasionally provide lead supervision to Laborers. A key aspect of this position is the requirement to be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, ensuring that the facilities are maintained and operational at all times. Typical work activities include operating snow plows and related equipment for snow removal, driving medium and heavy trucks for transporting materials and workmen, and performing maintenance tasks on highways and public works components. The operator will also be responsible for operating motorized lawn mowing equipment and performing various manual labor tasks such as cleaning, loading and unloading trucks, and repairing sewer lines. Additionally, the operator will use power tools like chain saws and jackhammers, maintain equipment service records, and assist mechanics with repairs. The position demands a good knowledge of the safe operation of motor equipment and power tools, as well as the ability to perform maintenance functions and simple repairs on the equipment used.
