About the position

The Plumber position at Antelope Valley College involves performing skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing fixtures and systems, including gas, water, wastewater, and irrigation systems. Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, the plumber will be responsible for a variety of tasks that ensure the proper functioning of plumbing systems within the college's facilities. This role requires a strong understanding of plumbing codes and regulations, as well as the ability to work independently and efficiently in both indoor and outdoor environments. The plumber will plan, estimate, design, and install plumbing systems, as well as repair existing systems. This includes working with water, gas, air, wastewater, and irrigation systems, and ensuring compliance with water and energy conservation practices. The position also involves repairing gas leaks, installing new plumbing fixtures, and maintaining records related to plumbing activities. The plumber will operate various hand tools and power equipment, and may also be responsible for training and providing work direction to maintenance staff as assigned. In addition to technical skills, the plumber must possess strong problem-solving abilities and the capacity to communicate effectively with administrators, contractors, and other personnel. The role requires physical stamina and dexterity, as it involves heavy lifting, climbing, and working in various weather conditions. The anticipated start date for this position is September 2024, with a work schedule of Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, not exceeding 40 hours per week.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, estimate, design and install plumbing systems and repair existing systems, including water, gas, air, wastewater, irrigation, backflow and cross-connection prevention.
  • Determine problems with water systems; repair valves, plugs, faucets and toilets, and order replacement parts as necessary; assure compliance with water and energy conservation methods and practices.
  • Repair gas leaks on boilers, water heaters and special appliances.
  • Install new plumbing fixtures, sinks, basins, toilets, drinking fountains, water heaters, dishwashers and other items.
  • Install water piping, tap water and sewer mains and laterals.
  • Prepare and maintain records and reports related to assigned activities, including estimates, hazardous materials records, call logs and equipment and materials receipts.
  • Cut and thread pipes; pack faucets and repair water supply, waste, sewage and drainage pipes; wipe and wash joints and clean drains and obstructions.
  • Work from blueprints and sketches in the repair of plumbing systems; develop rough sketches and isometrics as necessary; develop plot charts of current plumbing facilities.
  • Plan, organize and lay out assigned tasks; estimate labor and materials needed for projects; make recommendations for the selection, ordering and storage of plumbing supplies and equipment.
  • Operate a variety of maintenance-related hand tools and power equipment, including pipe threading and bending equipment, soldering equipment and various gauges, pumps and drain cleaning equipment; operate assigned vehicles including a forklift and front-end loader.
  • Communicate with administrators, contractors and others related to assigned projects; train and provide work direction to maintenance staff as assigned.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on fire sprinkler systems and pool equipment.
  • Review the work of contractors and report progress.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school supplemented by completion of a plumbing apprenticeship program and three years journey-level plumbing experience.
  • Valid California driver's license.
  • Must qualify for a valid Forklift Certificate within the first year in this classification.
