About the position
The Social Work Supervisor III (CPS) position at Durham County is a full-time role within the Department of Social Services (DSS). This position is pivotal in supervising a team of Child Welfare Social Workers, ensuring that they effectively receive and investigate reports of suspected child abuse or neglect. The supervisor will coordinate, implement, and manage all activities performed by the assigned social workers in the assessment/investigative unit, which operates from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. The role requires a comprehensive understanding of child welfare services, including the ability to protect children, comply with court orders, and adhere to both North Carolina and federal child welfare statutes and laws. The supervisor is also responsible for ensuring that the front-line social workers meet the expectations set by the county and agency, which may involve performing tasks in other areas of child welfare as needed. In addition to supervisory duties, the position demands a strong knowledge of North Carolina laws and policies governing child welfare. The supervisor must possess the ability to teach, plan, organize, and schedule management functions effectively. This role requires excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as a comprehensive understanding of social work administration principles, methods, and techniques. The supervisor will play a crucial role in fostering a supportive environment for the social workers, guiding them in their responsibilities and ensuring that they are equipped to handle the complexities of child protective services.
Responsibilities
- Supervises a team of Child Welfare Social Workers.

- Ensures compliance with court orders and North Carolina Child Welfare Statutes and laws.
- Meets the expectations of the county and agency regarding child welfare services.

Requirements
- Master's degree in social work from an accredited institution and two years of directly related experience;
- Bachelor's degree in social work from an accredited institution and three years of directly related experience;
- Master's degree in a human services field from an accredited institution and three years of directly related experience;
- Bachelor's degree and four years of directly related experience;
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and five years of directly related experience;
- Equivalent combination of education and experience.
