About the position
As a Howl-O-Scream Costume Specialist at SeaWorld San Diego, you will play a vital role in creating an immersive and thrilling experience for our guests during the Howl-O-Scream event. Your primary responsibilities will include designing, creating, and maintaining costumes that bring our Howl-O-Scream characters to life. You will collaborate closely with the creative and production teams to ensure that all costumes meet the highest standards of quality and scariness, contributing to the overall atmosphere of the event. In addition to costume creation, you will assist performers with costume fittings and quick changes, ensuring seamless performances throughout the event. Your role will also involve the coordination and instruction of cleaning, care, and maintenance of costumes, which includes making necessary repairs to costumes, costume characters, costume overlays, wigs, headpieces, and footwear. You will be responsible for the laundering and storage of costumes, maintaining the costuming integrity of assigned shows and productions, and ensuring cleanliness, safety, and quality standards are upheld in all assigned tasks. You will also be involved in constructing new costumes and assisting with the install and strike of assigned festivals and shows. Keeping the costuming areas clean and organized, stocking adequate inventory, and ensuring that costuming repair materials are available will be part of your responsibilities. Additionally, you will assist with pre-setting costumes for special events and functions, attend dress rehearsals, and maintain open communication with Stage Managers, Dresser Team, Costuming Staff, and Management to ensure all costume characters are in working order and in top quality condition. Your contributions will help create an unforgettable experience for our guests and build lasting connections within the SeaWorld Entertainment Community.
Responsibilities
- Design, create, and maintain costumes for Howl-O-Scream characters.
- Collaborate with creative and production teams to ensure costume quality and scariness.
- Assist performers with costume fittings and quick changes.
- Coordinate and instruct cleaning, care, and maintenance of costumes.
- Make necessary repairs to costumes, overlays, wigs, and footwear.
- Maintain cleanliness, safety, and quality standards in all tasks.
- Construct new costumes as needed.
- Assist with the install and strike of assigned festivals and shows.
- Keep costuming areas clean and organized, stocking adequate inventory and repair materials.
- Assist with dressing needs of performers during shows and events.
- Pre-set costumes for special events/functions.
- Attend dress rehearsals and onstage approvals when required.
- Maintain communication with Stage Managers and Costuming Staff regarding costume needs and updates.
- Assist with Opening and Closing duties in the Costume Shop.
- Participate in Entertainment activities and special events in other facilities as needed.
Requirements
- At least 18 years old.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum 2 years experience with costume construction, repair, or maintenance.
- Ability to work in an environment with atmospheric effects (fog, smoke, haze, etc.).
- Flexible schedule including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Office, and Excel.
- Strong written/verbal communication skills in English.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks under high pressure.
- Team-oriented with a kid-siderate attitude.
- Excellent organizational skills; project management experience is a plus.
- Ability to accept performance feedback and adapt accordingly.
- Ability to troubleshoot mechanical problems.
- Excellent hand and industrial machine sewing skills.
- Construction and/or costume design abilities preferred.
- Ability to follow specific instructions and teach others as needed.
- Experience with or willingness to learn airbrush techniques and designs.
- Experience with or willingness to learn wig care and maintenance.
- Sewing skills for costume alterations, construction, and repairs.
Nice-to-haves
- Theme park experience is a plus.
