About the position

The San Antonio Express-News is seeking a Federal Courts/Immigration Reporter to cover significant investigations, indictments, and trials related to federal law enforcement in Central and South Texas. This role involves generating enterprise stories on critical issues such as human trafficking and immigration, with a focus on engaging and impactful journalism. The reporter will work independently, developing stories from various sources and public records, and will frequently travel to the U.S.-Mexico border for assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Report on notable investigations, indictments, and trials in federal courts.
  • Generate enterprise stories about human trafficking, immigration, and public corruption.
  • Develop stories from official and unofficial sources and public records.
  • Regularly travel to the U.S.-Mexico border for coverage assignments.
  • Engage in digital journalism practices, including SEO and social media promotion of stories.

Requirements

  • At least five years of reporting experience, particularly in covering courts and criminal justice.
  • Strong skills in developing sources and understanding broader trends in the justice system.
  • Conversant in digital journalism fundamentals, including SEO and story production.

Nice-to-haves

  • Spanish fluency is highly desired.
