About the position

Cook Inlet Tug & Barge is seeking qualified candidates for a seasonal deckhand position aboard a harbor tug in Seward, Alaska. The role requires availability to work nights and weekends for cruise ship arrivals and departures, with the possibility for advanced or continued employment. The primary job purpose is to maintain the vessels in a state of readiness to perform work for customers as needed, following the directions of the captain of the vessel. Responsibilities include pulling heavy lines, climbing onto and walking on boats, barges, and mooring dolphins.

Responsibilities

  • Use the VHF portable radio.
  • Maintain the interior and exterior of the tug including cleaning, painting, and rust removal.
  • Knowledge of engine room to maintain appropriate fluid levels, starting of main and auxiliary engines, preparation and securing of tug upon departure/return to slip.
  • Perform periodic engine room checks while underway.
  • Change oil and filter as needed.
  • Follow a general maintenance checklist for equipment.
  • Keep the area clean and free of oil.
  • Tighten and grease/replace shaft packing before leaving the boat.
  • Take on fuel and water, and pump bilges.

Requirements

  • Must possess and maintain US Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Document (MMD) or Merchant Mariners Credential (MMC).
  • Must possess Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license.
  • Able to work weekends, holidays, and at night.
