About the position

The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), MD/PhD Program is currently recruiting for an Academic Program Support Director. The Academic Program Support Director of the Medical Science Training Program (MSTP) is responsible for the management of the day-to-day activities related to the MD-PhD Program and successful implementation. This includes facilitation and oversight of the MSTP T32 training grant. This position maintains productive alliances with the MSTP applicants, research faculty members, MD-PhD students, program administrators, alumni, the School of Medicine Office of Admissions, as well as various Deans and other SOM leadership. Oversight of the MD-PhD operating funds and MD-PhD student financials is essential to this position. The Academic Program Support Director works independently in a leadership role, managing the MSTP's strategic plan and mission to achieve and ensure success. Works with senior management in developing goals and milestones for the MD-PhD Program.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all administrative and financial activities of a vibrant MSTP, which is a broad, rigorous, interdisciplinary research training program between the UMB medical and graduate schools.
  • Manage a complex and large T32 MSTP NIH Training Grant-assist in the preparation of renewal, grant administration.
  • Assist in the preparation of Progress Reports (RPPR) for NIH grant.
  • Maintain NIH X-Tract database of MSTP students.
  • Supervise MD-PhD Coordinator who oversees the MSTP website, travel arrangements for staff and MD-PhD students.
  • Work in conjunction with senior management to create, review and approve budgets for MD-PhD student financials (covers medical school tuition, fees, health insurance, and stipends) on an annual basis.
  • Oversee MD-PhD Operating budget.
  • Organize, assist and access MSTP courses: Molecules to Medicine, Clinical Case Studies, Physician Scientist Seminars, F-30 workshops, PhD information sessions, Summer & Winter Research Symposiums and MSTP Annual Retreat.
  • Assist graduate students with budget for submission of F-30 NIH grants.
  • Work with database manager to capture information on MD-PhD students and MD-PhD alumni.
  • Organize all aspects of MD-PhD Admissions-schedule virtual interviews; communicate with potential applicants, faculty, MSTP Advisory Committee members, SOM Office of Admissions, trainee recruitment, selection and monitoring.
  • Coordinate MD-PhD interviews to meet with faculty from all departments, programs, institutes and centers.
  • Schedule MSTP Second Visit Days in the spring for MSTP acceptees.
  • Oversee student record keeping in conjunction with database manager.
  • Liaise with MSTP Student Council and senior management on policy management.
  • Organize additional program activities that enrich the training experience which include retreats, seminars, and opportunities for students to present their research projects, and programmatic oversight and guidance in monitoring the biomedical research program.
  • Recruit potential applicants for the MD-PhD Program from undergraduate institutions such as UMBC, attend/travel to national conferences such as ABRCMS, SACNAS; pre-health recruitment fairs at: NIH, University of Maryland-College Park.
  • Plan the biennial Stephen Max, PhD Lectureship in conjunction with the SOM Development Office, MSTP students and Max family.
  • Attend national MD-PhD GREAT Group meetings and represent the University of Maryland MSTP.
  • Cooperate and communicate with all SOM faculty and staff, senior management on all aspects of MSTP.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, Master's or PhD in education or health-related program preferred.
  • Six (6) years of experience in all aspects of academic program administration.
  • Two (2) years of direct supervision or management experience.

  • Additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience.
