About the position

The Accountant I (DEMEP) position at the Stanton Campus in Newark, DE, is a full-time role responsible for intermediate accounting activities and the application of accounting practices and principles to support the fiscal functions of a section, division, or department. The incumbent will engage in various accounting operations, including posting and reconciling accounts, reporting account activities, and ensuring compliance with accepted accounting standards and applicable State or Federal regulations. This role requires interaction with other State agencies, vendors, and the public to resolve discrepancies and answer inquiries related to accounts and billing. In this position, the incumbent will maintain systems, procedures, and methods for recordkeeping, cost gathering, and accounts reporting. They will be responsible for maintaining and reconciling ledgers and accounts, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Petty Cash. The preparation of financial reports for budget preparation and monitoring is also a key responsibility. The incumbent will prepare and verify financial documents such as payment vouchers and invoices, ensuring accurate coding and charges for all encumbrances and disbursements. Additionally, the role may involve training, assigning, and reviewing the work of clerical employees performing related duties. The incumbent will also be expected to perform other related duties as required, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the accounting department.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains systems, procedures and methods for recordkeeping, cost gathering, and accounts reporting.
  • Maintains and reconciles a variety of ledgers and accounts to include Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Petty Cash.
  • Prepares a variety of reports on financial activities and status for budget preparation and monitoring.
  • Prepares and/or verifies financial documents such as payment vouchers, invoices, etc. Processes third party billings.
  • Ensures accurate codes and charges for all encumbrances and disbursements.
  • Interacts with vendors, State agencies, and the public to answer questions and to resolve account and billing discrepancies.
  • Trains, assigns, and reviews the work of clerical employees performing related duties when needed.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in a relevant field and four (4) years of intermediate accounting experience; or other equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of intermediate accounting.
  • Knowledge of State and Federal accounting system, budgetary process, and auditing procedures.
  • Knowledge of secretarial and office practices, procedures and equipment.
  • Ability to learn principles of supervision.
  • Ability to perform intermediate accounting and financial recordkeeping.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral form.

Benefits

  • $3,000 market-driven hiring stipend for full-time employment.
