About the position

The Acquisitions Editor for Adult Titles at Pauline Books & Media is responsible for overseeing the publication process of adult book manuscripts, collaborating with various teams to ensure the successful release of 25 titles per year. This role involves acquiring manuscripts, maintaining relationships with authors, and ensuring that publications reflect the Catholic Faith in a contemporary and engaging manner. The position requires a deep understanding of current trends and the needs of the audience, as well as a commitment to the mission of communicating Christ's message.

Responsibilities

  • Shepherd book manuscripts through the publication process, including editing and final checks.
  • Collaborate with the Editorial Manager and other Acquisitions Editors to develop editorial lines.
  • Actively acquire manuscripts and authors aligned with audience needs.
  • Review incoming proposals and direct the Editorial Associate on responses.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with authors and licensors.
  • Initiate leads from various team members and leverage repackaging opportunities.
  • Meet weekly with the Editorial Manager to discuss new and ongoing projects.
  • Prepare and present viable projects at team meetings.
  • Track projects through established processes and maintain project documentation.
  • Work with authors to complete manuscripts for Developmental Editor review.
  • Consult experts to ensure fidelity to Church teaching and appropriate tone.
  • Seek forewords and confirm necessary permissions with the Editorial Associate.
  • Provide design suggestions to the Design Department for book covers.
  • Notify authors of book titles and confirm approvals before filing.
  • Review manuscripts before copyediting and fill out project specifications.
  • Meet with Marketing publicist to hand off authors pre-release.
  • Present new titles to the sales team and contribute to marketing efforts.
  • Attend publishing trade shows and church gatherings as a representative of PBM.
  • Stay informed about current events in the Church and publishing trends.
  • Propose new ways to improve the quality and diffusion of PBM materials.

Requirements

  • Studies in English, writing, communications, theology, or related fields.
  • Ongoing in-depth knowledge of the Catholic faith.
  • Experience in church ministry or apostolate.
  • Experience in book editing and/or traditional publishing.
  • Knowledge of current trends in society and audience needs.
  • Excellent writing skills and command of the English language.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Confident use of Office 365 (Word, Excel, Teams, SharePoint).

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in marketing or public relations within the publishing industry.
  • Familiarity with digital publishing trends and technologies.
