About the position

Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) is a nonresidential two-year institution of higher education that serves Central Virginia - principally residents of the City of Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson. Our scenic campus is located in Albemarle County, Virginia. We are one of 23 community colleges in Virginia that comprise the Virginia Community College System (VCCS). PVCC is nationally recognized for its outstanding transfer curriculum; its relationship with its neighbor, the University of Virginia; and its Workforce Development Programs serving local employers. Applications will be received and considered on a continuous basis, as openings occur. We are seeking to identify qualified and interested adjunct faculty members in the following teaching disciplines and/or subject areas: ELECTRONICS/MANUFACTURING. The adjunct professor will be responsible for teaching electronics and manufacturing courses in a hands-on experiential format. Professor will have knowledge and application of electronic devices, current microcontrollers, mechanical processes and machinery, and basic communication protocols. Students in these classes build on fundamental electronics and manufacturing skills to troubleshoot, design, and build different projects related to the course material. The instructor will be responsible for making sure the projects focus on industry skills and the materials are provided for students in a timely manner. Primarily face-to-face with the possibility of remote instruction.

Responsibilities

  • Teach developmental and/or college-level courses, which may include distance-learning courses during the day and evening, on weekdays and weekends.
  • Create positive classroom/lab culture that provides foundational knowledge for electronics and manufacturing courses.
  • Teach in a hands-on, experiential format.
  • Maintain classroom management of lab-based classrooms, including maintaining equipment and supplies.
  • Work with students in a diverse environment with a sensitivity to all members of the community.
  • Prepare students for electronics and mechatronics certification exams.
  • Help develop project-based modules for students and expand current curriculum.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in the field or Associate's degree in the field with demonstrated competency in the teaching field.
  • Two years of related occupational experience.
  • Expert skills, knowledge, experience and education in the subject area.
  • Two years teaching experience and work experience in the field.
  • Experience with online teaching.

Nice-to-haves

  • Troubleshooting basic circuitry and electronics problems related to transistors and microcontrollers.
  • Knowledge of C/C++ and Python programming languages.
  • Experience using and developing network systems using various ISM communication protocols like WiFi, Bluetooth, RF LoRa, and others.
  • Experience with CNC, Laser Cutter, 3D printer - CAD/CAM design and use of machines.
