About the position
As an Advanced Mechanical Design Engineer (Rotating Equipment) at Honeywell, you will leverage your mechanical design expertise to create innovative solutions tailored to our customers' needs. Your primary focus will be on designing and optimizing rotating equipment, including pumps, compressors, and turbines, ensuring they meet the evolving demands of our clients. You will collaborate closely with a team of engineers, playing a crucial role in the development of cutting-edge products and driving technological advancements in the rotating equipment sector. This position is based in Des Plaines, IL, and operates on a hybrid work schedule after an initial 90-day period. In this role, you will have a significant impact on Honeywell's success by designing high-performance rotating equipment that adheres to customer specifications and industry standards. Your expertise in mechanical design, analysis, and testing will be vital in ensuring product quality and customer satisfaction. Additionally, you will be expected to contribute to building a strong, diverse team by recruiting talent, identifying successors, and fostering an inclusive culture. The position reports directly to the Engineering Manager, and you will be expected to engage with various stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring that all requirements are met efficiently and effectively.
Responsibilities
- Generating requisitions for various types of rotating equipment such as hot centrifugal fans and blowers, pumps, and compressors.
- Incorporating applicable code and customer requirements to produce a complete technical definition of the equipment.
- Assuming the primary liaison role with various outside suppliers.
- Technically evaluating bids and participating in the supplier selection process.
- Reviewing supplier designs against licensor requirements, code requirements, and customer requirements.
- Coordinating with suppliers throughout the fabrication phase of the project.
- Visiting shops for kickoff meetings, critical inspections, and providing feedback to improve future designs.
- Working closely with all members of the project team including quality assurance, piping, instrumentation, electrical, process, structural designers, purchasing personnel, and project managers to meet project requirements for rotating equipment.
- Staying current with applicable API standards for pumps and compressors.
- Troubleshooting design issues and resolving them.
- Working with the team to update infrastructure.
- Providing sales support to review customer specifications and provide cost estimates for static equipment.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering.
- Experience in the specification of rotating equipment is required.
- Experience with High Temperature Centrifugal Fans / Blowers is a plus.
- Experience with pumps, compressors, lube oil systems, and seals is a plus.
- Experience in an equipment manufacturing environment is a plus.
- Good working knowledge and use of Adobe Acrobat Standard and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Organizational skills with a disciplined approach to maintaining project files and documentation of correspondence and issue resolution.
- Ability to multi-task and maintain contributions on schedule for several projects simultaneously.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to interact with suppliers effectively.
- Ability to work well in a team environment and provide updates to Project Managers, Project Engineers, and Procurement.
