About the position

The Sierra Club is seeking an Advancement Director for the Northeast/South Region, a pivotal role within the Advancement team of the nation's leading grassroots environmental organization. This position is crucial at a time when the planet faces significant challenges, including climate change and systemic injustices. The Advancement Director will be responsible for identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major gifts of $25,000 and above, contributing to the organization's goal of raising over $65 million annually for impactful campaigns. The role requires a strong commitment to environmental, racial, economic, and gender justice, aligning with the Sierra Club's mission to ensure that all people benefit from a healthy planet and a direct connection to nature. In this role, the Advancement Director will manage a portfolio of high-potential prospects and donors, engaging them through various means such as face-to-face meetings, phone calls, and digital communications. The successful candidate will work closely with the Sr. Managing Director and other team members to develop strategies for donor engagement, ensuring that the philanthropic priorities of donors align with the Sierra Club's programs and needs. The position also involves significant travel, with expectations of 40-50% travel throughout the eastern and southern United States to meet with donors and prospects. The Advancement Director will play a key role in strategic planning and execution, driving initiatives to build a robust pipeline of major donors and high-net-worth individuals. This includes maintaining knowledge of environmental issues and collaborating with campaign and chapter staff to implement major gift programs and initiatives. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of fundraising best practices and a proven track record in major gift fundraising, with the ability to inspire significant financial support for the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a portfolio of high-potential prospects and donors, identifying and cultivating new prospects.
  • Engage with prospects and donors through face-to-face meetings, phone, video conference, and digital engagements.
  • Solicit assigned donors for gifts of $25,000 and more to meet organizational priorities and fundraising goals.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to identify and pursue new prospects, developing strategies for each prospect.
  • Leverage donor engagement events in the Northeast and South to identify, cultivate, and solicit new and existing donors.
  • Prepare and send donor correspondence, including written solicitations and proposals.
  • Develop and maintain in-depth knowledge of the organization's activities, priorities, and needs.
  • Capture all interactions and relationships in the donor database in a timely manner.
  • Drive strategies to identify, cultivate, upgrade, and solicit new donors, building a strong pipeline of major donors.
  • Maintain knowledge of environmental issues, working with key staff to develop and implement major gift programs.

Requirements

  • 7-10 years of senior-level experience in development and major gift fundraising.
  • Strong background in identifying, qualifying, cultivating, and soliciting six-figure gifts.
  • Proven ability to build a portfolio of prospects and grow a revenue pipeline.
  • Knowledge of fundraising best practices, planned giving, and campaign planning.
  • Experience in identifying, qualifying, cultivating, and stewarding individual and institutional donors.
  • Ability to develop strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency with fundraising databases and MS Office applications.
  • Passion for the Sierra Club's commitment to environmental and social justice.
