About the position

The mission of the Student Advising and Success Department is to foster student success by creating a resource-rich learning environment that will promote lifelong learning as well as academic, career, and personal growth. Advisors empower students through meaningful, intentional student interactions to promote retention and completion. These interactions are based on the assessed and expressed educational needs of each student. Advisors provide consistent and intrusive support, guidance, and interactions to assigned advisees. Advisors intentionally connect career exploration and development to academic planning, fostering a student-centered success environment through programming and community-building activities, and connecting students to CWI and community resources to support their success.

Responsibilities

  • Create and implement programming that promotes student success, faculty and student interaction, and community building.
  • Build intentional and supportive relationships with assigned advisees, offering individualized guidance and advocacy.
  • Actively participate in institutional and departmental initiatives aimed at fostering student engagement and retention.
  • Provide accurate, comprehensive academic advising that supports student progress toward degree completion and career readiness.
  • Monitor academic performance, offering timely interventions for at-risk students and advising on Academic Warnings or Contracts.
  • Assist students in navigating academic challenges and making informed career decisions using appropriate tools and resources.
  • Develop, implement, and assess success and retention programs, including academic success workshops, faculty interaction events, and career development activities.
  • Coordinate activities to support academic planning, career exploration, and community development, accommodating occasional evening and weekend schedules.
  • Provide leadership in assessing and improving the effectiveness of retention strategies and programming.
  • Stay current on institutional, state, and federal policies related to academic advising, financial aid, and degree completion, ensuring compliance and accurate student guidance.
  • Serve as a resource for students, connecting them with campus and community resources while providing first-line support for student conduct issues.
  • Model integrity, professionalism, and the NACADA Advising Core Values in all interactions and responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience
  • Strong technical abilities: database systems, presentation software, Microsoft Office suites, or equivalent
  • Cross-cultural interpersonal and writing skills are necessary
  • Public speaking skills and ability to represent the college positively to diverse populations
  • Event Planning/Coordination skills
  • Ability to interpret, follow, and administer academic and administrative policy
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form
  • Ability to travel between various locations throughout the day
  • Experience in college/university advising, career counseling, admission, registrar, financial aid office, or goal-oriented client/customer service work preferred
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred
