About the position

The Manager, External Affairs at American Water is responsible for providing senior-level communications counsel to the state president and senior management team. This role involves developing, coordinating, implementing, and managing all external communications activities to support the state business plan and operating objectives. Key responsibilities include media relations, public relations, community relations, and corporate social responsibility, with a focus on proactive and strategic communications to effectively position the company within the community and manage critical issues as they arise.

Responsibilities

  • Provide senior-level communications counsel to the state president and senior management team.
  • Develop and manage all external communications activities to support the state business plan.
  • Implement strategic communications plans for media relations, community relations, and corporate social responsibility.
  • Respond rapidly to unanticipated events and critical issues, providing proactive communications counsel.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with key media outlets and educate them on issues of interest to American Water.
  • Plan and manage large press and community events, developing talking points and media materials.
  • Monitor internal and external business developments that may impact the company's reputation.
  • Work closely with other communication managers to ensure timely development of materials.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations or related field.
  • Extensive experience in developing and implementing strategic communications strategies.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of community-based organizations and local political issues.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet strict deadlines.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Access).
  • Experience in project management and managing vendor contracts.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in crisis communications and serving as a spokesperson during crises.
  • Familiarity with Reg FD disclosure requirements for publicly traded companies.
