About the position

The Special Education Teacher at Colchester High School is responsible for providing tailored educational plans to eligible students, ensuring that their academic and social needs are met. This role involves both instructional and consulting responsibilities, where the teacher supports students and collaborates with other educators to foster an inclusive learning environment. The teacher will work closely with students to develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and related service plans, maintaining necessary documentation and compliance with state and federal regulations under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). In addition to direct instruction, the Special Education Teacher will engage in individual conferences with students, parents, and outside agencies to discuss progress and strategies for success. Participation in the school-based Education Support Team and the Individual Education Program Team is essential, as is conducting evaluations and assessments to inform instructional practices. The teacher will also provide leadership and professional development to instructional assistants and tutors, ensuring that best practices in teaching and learning are implemented throughout the school. The position requires a commitment to the district's mission and action plan, as well as collaboration with other staff members and administrators to promote an inclusive service delivery model. The Special Education Teacher will be evaluated based on performance standards outlined in the district's Master Agreement, and will report directly to the Building Principals and the Director of Special Education.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct students according to their developmental needs and in collaboration with other school staff members.
  • Develop and implement IEPs and/or related service plans for assigned students.
  • Maintain necessary records and paperwork regarding individual students, programs, and Medicaid requirements.
  • Initiate, encourage, and participate in individual conferences with students, their teachers, parents, and outside agencies.
  • Participate as a member of the school-based Education Support Team and Evaluation planning and Individual Education Program Team.
  • Conduct annual/initial evaluation and other comprehensive assessments as required. Communicate evaluation results to parents and staff.
  • Collaborate with other staff members, administrators, and/or human resource groups in promoting an inclusionary service delivery model.
  • Provide leadership and staff development to instructional assistants/tutors and other staff members as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate current best practices in teaching and learning.
  • Comply with all state and federal special education regulations under IDEA.
  • Participate in all meetings called by the building principal and Director of Special Education.
  • Assume other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education Coordinator or building administrators.

Requirements

  • Current VT license with an endorsement in special education.
  • Current knowledge of Special Education and related laws.
  • Masters degree in special education; advanced coursework highly desirable.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and problem solving skills.
  • Prior successful teaching experience as well as skills in collaboration and teamwork.
  • Commitment to the district mission and Action Plan.
