The University of California, Berkeley is seeking a qualified individual to join the Berkeley Institute for Data Science (BIDS) as part of the California Law Enforcement Accountability Network (CLEAN) initiative. This position involves the development of server, operating system, desktop, and mobile applications and services. The incumbent will be responsible for researching, designing, developing specifications, writing, modifying, testing, debugging, troubleshooting, and maintaining source code. The role requires a comprehensive understanding of scientific research requirements, community standards, and leading industry practices, particularly in the context of police misconduct and use-of-force data management. The successful candidate will apply advanced software concepts to plan, design, develop, modify, debug, deploy, and evaluate highly complex database structures for functional areas. This includes developing and coordinating project plans, leading the development of a long-term, community-vetted plan for the CLEAN initiative, and performing or directing highly complex data modeling, performance, and integration testing. The role also involves sophisticated data and systems analysis to identify concerns within the ecosystem of tools and working directly with the research and open-source development community to address those concerns. In addition to technical skills, the position requires excellent project leadership and management abilities, as well as effective communication skills to convey technical information to both technical and non-technical personnel. The incumbent will also be expected to initiate and oversee changes in development, maintenance, and documentation standards, and investigate specifications for cross-project integration and data sharing. This role is integral to enhancing transparency in policing through data science and collaboration with various stakeholders.
