About the position

The Applied Research Mathematician position at the National Security Agency (NSA) focuses on conducting advanced research in quantum computing, specifically in quantum algorithms and quantum error correction. The role aims to support NSA's strategic efforts in enhancing national security through innovative mathematical techniques and technologies. Candidates will engage in research that contributes to the NSA's Signals Intelligence and Cybersecurity missions, collaborating with a dynamic team to solve complex problems and develop impactful solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research in quantum algorithms and quantum error correction.
  • Engage with NSA and US government quantum computing efforts.
  • Identify important research problems in quantum computing.
  • Publish research findings in academic journals or deliver operational solutions.
  • Prototype and implement solutions in computer code/scripting.
  • Contribute to other mathematics research efforts as needed.

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related STEM field.
  • At least 24 semester credit hours in advanced mathematics courses.
  • Research and/or development experience in quantum algorithms and/or quantum error correction.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and within diverse teams.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with programming languages such as C/C++, Rust, Python, SageMath, MAGMA.
  • Knowledge of mathematical concepts and principles.
  • Experience in cryptanalysis, cryptography, or vulnerability research.
