About the position

The Aquatic Biologist position within the Water Toxics Unit of the State of Michigan focuses on supporting the Fish Contaminant Monitoring Program (FCMP). The role involves collecting and processing fish samples from various water bodies, assessing chemical contaminants, and maintaining field collection gear. The position is available at multiple levels, with increasing responsibilities and experience requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a crew member to collect and process fish from Michigan's Areas of Concern (AOCs), the Great Lakes, and its tributaries.
  • Assist with caged fish studies to assess chemical concentrations in select Great Lakes tributaries.
  • Assist with field collection gear cleaning and maintenance.
  • Enter data received from the analytical laboratory into the FCMP database.
  • Oversee fish collections from Michigan's Areas of Concern (AOCs), the Great Lakes, and its tributaries.
  • Maintain and clean FCMP field collection gear and equipment.
  • Coordinate staff training to build capacity for FCMP sample collection and maintain the Section's training matrix.

Requirements

  • Possession of a bachelor's degree in the natural or physical sciences with at least 24 semester (36 term) credits in aquatic biology, aquatic entomology, environmental science, environmental toxicology, fisheries biology, hydrology, limnology, statistics, water science, or wetland ecology.
  • For Aquatic Biologist 10: One year of professional experience in assessing the effects of pollution on aquatic life equivalent to an Aquatic Biologist 9.
  • For Aquatic Biologist P11: Two years of professional experience in assessing the effects of pollution on aquatic life equivalent to an Aquatic Biologist, including one year equivalent to an Aquatic Biologist 10.
  • For Aquatic Biologist 12: Three years of professional experience in assessing the effects of pollution on aquatic life equivalent to an Aquatic Biologist, including one year equivalent to an Aquatic Biologist P11.
