About The Position

The Architect II position at Virginia Tech involves assisting the Director of Capital Design in aligning Capital Projects with the university's mission and strategic goals. The role includes participating in design reviews, ensuring projects meet aesthetic and functional standards, and promoting sustainable design practices. The Architect II will also help establish design standards and provide project management expertise throughout the Capital Project processes.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree in Architecture or a BS in Architecture with equivalent professional experience.
  • Extensive experience as an architect with a strong background in licensed practice.
  • Demonstrated project management expertise.
  • Significant focus on environmentally sustainable project design.
  • Registration or a clear path to registration as a Professional Architect in Virginia within six months of employment.
  • LEED AP with Specialty accreditation.
  • Experience in applying sustainable benchmarking within architectural practice.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Proficient in standard office applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Skilled in online/web applications (e.g., SharePoint, OneDrive, GIS mapping).
  • Proficient in design software (e.g., Revit, AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite).
  • Experienced with construction management applications (e.g., Procore, Newforma, BlueBeam).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working on historically significant building projects.
  • Experience in a university or similar institutional setting.
  • Familiarity with Commonwealth of Virginia directives and higher education facilities requirements.
  • Experience in design of higher education, campus, and urban planning/design.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining design standards.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Director of Capital Design in aligning Capital Projects with the University's mission and strategic goals.
  • Conduct design reviews of University Capital Projects from concept through implementation phases.
  • Ensure that project aesthetics align with authorized intent and Campus Design Principles.
  • Participate in value management and construction review processes for Capital Projects to ensure timely and budget-compliant completion.
  • Provide expertise in sustainable design and promote best practices during Capital Project processes.
  • Establish and maintain design standards for the University.
