About the position

The University of Michigan is seeking an Armed Security Officer to join the Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS). This role is essential in ensuring the safety and security of the university's facilities, particularly at Michigan Medicine, located at 1500 E. Medical Center Drive, Ann Arbor, MI. The DPSS operates 24/7, providing a comprehensive approach to safety and security across the university campuses in Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint. The Armed Security Officer will be responsible for monitoring and operating weapons detection systems, safeguarding employees, visitors, and guests, and conducting thorough security screenings of individuals, vehicles, and packages using both electronic and physical methods. In this position, the officer will have arrest authority under PA330 while on property and in full uniform. The role requires a commitment to public safety, excellent communication skills, and the ability to respond to immediate threats without delay. The officer will also be responsible for maintaining a meticulous daily activity log, preparing detailed incident reports, and confiscating illegal weapons as necessary. This position emphasizes proactive engagement with the community, ensuring that everyone feels valued, welcomed, and safe within the university environment. Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough security screening of individuals, vehicles, packages, and other items using electronic and physical methods as required.
  • Operate weapons detection systems and various electronic security devices to ensure thorough screening processes.
  • Assist visitors by providing answers to inquiries and offering clear directions within the facility while prioritizing security measures.
  • Keep a meticulous daily activity log documenting incidents and promptly prepare detailed incident reports.
  • Confiscate illegal weapons discovered during duty, ensuring the safety of the medical facilities.
  • Temporarily confiscate and store items that could be used as a weapon per policy.
  • Respond to immediate threats without delay.
  • Prevent unauthorized access to assigned facilities.
  • Undertake other duties as assigned related to visitor management.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Five years of armed governmental service or armed security experience.
  • Ability to pass an MCOLES PA 330 (3-week academy) and 80 hours of comprehensive firearms training to include MILO (scenario-based training).
  • Prior experience with conflict resolution, de-escalation, and active engagement with the public.
  • Demonstrated commitment to public safety, excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Prior experience making decisions and acting quickly in stressful situations.
  • Ability to exercise independent, sound judgment and remain calm in emergencies.
  • Proficient in public and interpersonal relations.
  • Willingness to undergo training on relevant software and techniques, quarterly firearms training, Advance Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT), or comparable active attacker training after hire.
