About the position

The Art Teacher is responsible for developing each pupil's ability for creative expression in visual terms, utilizing skills and techniques of artistic expression appropriate to the pupil's interests and abilities. The role involves fostering aesthetic understandings and appreciations, as well as discovering and developing talents in the field of art among students. The teacher will instruct secondary pupils in various art forms, including crafts, drawing, painting, lettering, design, art history, and three-dimensional art.

Responsibilities

  • Teaches knowledge and skills in arts, including crafts, drawing, painting, lettering, design, art history, and/or three-dimensional art to secondary pupils.
  • Provides instruction by which pupils develop aesthetic concepts and appreciations and the ability to make qualitative judgments about art.
  • Demonstrates techniques in activities such as drawing, painting, and modeling, using standard and/or teacher-prepared instructional aids.
  • Instructs pupils in proper care and use of tools and materials.
  • Organizes storage areas and controls use of materials, equipment, and tools to prevent loss or abuse.
  • Plans and presents art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit pupils' work for the school and the school's stakeholders.
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times specified.
  • Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation.
  • Establishes clear outcomes for all lessons, class work, and assessments.
  • Supports the program of study using a variety of instructional techniques and media.
  • Serves as a model for the district's mission and vision.
  • Assesses the progress of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports.
  • Recognizes potential learning disabilities of students and seeks assistance as needed.
  • Takes necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law and district policy.
  • Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
  • Develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and maintains order in a fair manner.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings and serves on staff committees.
  • Analyzes and uses appropriate data to guide instruction.
  • Maintains a standard of performance and conduct as required by state law and local board of education.
  • Provides detailed plans for substitute teachers including lessons and schedules.
  • Supervises pupils at school-related functions on and off campus.
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • A valid Tennessee Teacher's Certificate with the appropriate endorsement.
  • Successful student teaching experience.
