About the position

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students and 60+ different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. KCKPS is home to Sumner Academy, the #6 highest rated High School in the Nation and #1 High School in Kansas according to the US News rankings. With Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, we are the fifth largest district in the state of Kansas and our student population is approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian. To serve our students, the district employs approximately 4,000 employees including more than 1,800 teachers.

Responsibilities

  • Ability to implement 21st Century Skills into the curriculum.
  • Ability to work a full duty day in the location or locations assigned.
  • Assess student abilities as related to desired educational goals, objectives, student outcomes and Head Start Performance Standards.
  • Plan and employ a variety of appropriate instruction/learning strategies and activities compatible with the physical facility and the needs of the students.
  • Manage the behavior of learners in the classroom and participate in the management of student behavior in other parts of the site.
  • Communicate to students and parents instructional expectations, student progress or lack of progress.
  • Assess student achievement and maintain appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation.
  • Participate in planning effective instructional goals, objectives, methods and curriculum with other program personnel.
  • Engage in professional growth and development activities including staff meetings and in-service training.
  • Assist in the documentation of student progress by maintaining and submitting appropriate records and reports.
  • Ensure that the classroom and/or instructional environment is attractive, healthful, safe and conducive to learning.
  • Participate in extracurricular activities as requested by the principal.
  • Participate as a regular teacher in IEP meetings for IDEA students.
  • Maintain good knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials and equipment of instructional specialty.
  • Study and learn current research and theory.
  • Plan and implement lessons based on curriculum objectives and the needs and abilities of students.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents and peers.
  • Take attendance and keep attendance registers according to Board policy.
  • Know and follow Section 504 and IDEA amendments.
  • Maintain a neat and professional appearance.

Requirements

  • Good knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials and equipment of instructional specialty.
  • Good knowledge of student growth and development applicable to the grade assigned.
  • Good knowledge of early childhood program of studies related to mission, goals and organization.
  • Skilled and effective in oral and written communication.
  • Excellent human relations skills.
  • Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed.
  • Ability to move around the room to effectively monitor student work and behavior.
  • Possess the patience, caring and desire needed to work with students and parents.
