About the position

The City of Santa Clara is seeking Student Interns for various departments including Public Works, Silicon Valley Power, Water and Sewer Utilities, and Finance. Interns will support engineering, compliance, finance, and administrative activities across these departments. The positions are designed to provide hands-on experience in public service and utility operations, with opportunities to work closely with experienced professionals in the field.

Responsibilities

  • Support construction engineering activities in the Field Services Division.
  • Assist with office activities such as material submittal processing, meeting minutes, schedule and estimate review/preparation, research, and reports.
  • Conduct field activities including daily reporting, quantity measurement, and data collection.
  • Perform data entry, file organization, and document management.
  • Process Transportation/Minor Encroachment Permits in the Traffic Division.
  • Review simple traffic control plans and update traffic volume maps.
  • Carry out fieldwork for resident concerns, including measurements and photo logging.
  • Assist in producing community meeting mailers and supporting public outreach activities.
  • Support environmental activities in the Water & Sewer Utilities Department.
  • Assist with compliance reviews and environmental program development in the Compliance Division.
  • Provide administrative support for engineering projects including filing and data entry.
  • Gain hands-on accounting and finance experience in the Finance Department.

Requirements

  • Current enrollment in an accredited college or university for Student Intern II and III positions.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office software suite.
  • Ability to use common hand tools.
  • Knowledge and ability to use computers and related applications.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with others.
  • Ability to carry out oral and written instructions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with GIS work.
  • Knowledge of public works and utility operations.
  • Interest in renewable energy and environmental compliance.
