About the position

The Assistant Director of Communications and Content Strategy at UMass Amherst's Commonwealth Honors College (CHC) is responsible for leading the communications unit's daily operations. This role focuses on creating and managing dynamic content across various platforms to enhance CHC's visibility. Key responsibilities include overseeing graphic design, videography, social media strategy, and promoting CHC activities, while fostering a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage a content and messaging strategy for CHC in collaboration with the Director of Communications.
  • Research, write, and pitch feature stories and profiles for various platforms including the CHC website and social media.
  • Create and distribute electronic newsletters and other communications materials.
  • Lead and direct the College's social media presence, ensuring engaging and accurate posts.
  • Provide graphic design support for marketing materials and promotional content.
  • Lead photography and videography efforts for CHC communications.
  • Supervise the Communications student staff, assigning projects and tracking progress.
  • Coordinate with external vendors such as printers and freelance writers.
  • Collaborate with the University's Office of News & Media Relations for media strategies.
  • Create content calendars to maximize audience engagement across platforms.
  • Provide insights on best practices for content strategies within CHC.
  • Manage the Commonwealth Honors College website to enhance audience engagement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree and four years of relevant work experience in communications, advertising, or public relations, or a Master's Degree and two years of relevant work experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of digital content creation, including photography and videography.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to interact effectively with a diverse population.
  • Knowledge of current media technology, including web maintenance and social media.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills.
  • Excellent time and task management skills with attention to detail.
  • Strong initiative and ability to manage complex activities.
  • Understanding of various publishing and distribution platforms.

  • Experience in higher education.

  • Experience with website management and Adobe Creative Suite.
