About the position

The Assistant Major Permit Coordinator at the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is responsible for processing applications for permits under the Coastal Area Management Act and the State Dredge and Fill Law. This role involves coordinating multi-agency reviews and providing technical assistance for infrastructure-related projects across 20 coastal counties. The position plays a crucial role in ensuring compliance with environmental regulations while supporting various stakeholders, including state agencies and local municipalities.

Responsibilities

  • Process applications under the Coastal Area Management Act (CAMA) and Dredge and Fill laws, focusing on infrastructure projects.
  • Provide coordination and technical assistance to the Division and the Coastal Resources Commission for special projects as directed by Division management.
  • Coordinate intergovernmental consultation on Federal projects that require review for consistency with the NC Coastal Management Program.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related field.
  • Two years of experience related to the area of assignment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of physical and/or biological processes associated with coastal ecosystems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of local, state, and/or federal permitting programs related to coastal development.
  • Experience in communicating information with staff, government officials, interest groups, and/or the public using written and/or oral communication skills.
