About the position

The Assistant Nurse Manager in the Psychiatric Emergency Department at Backus Hospital plays a crucial role in ensuring the delivery of high-quality healthcare services. This position is recognized as a clinical expert within the service line and serves as a leadership role model for Registered Nurses and all staff under their supervision. The Assistant Nurse Manager works closely with both the emergency department and inpatient behavioral health staff to direct operations in a manner that ensures the safe and efficient movement of patients through the department. This includes assigning patient care activities, ensuring that staff are qualified to care for assigned patients, supporting team members, and maintaining a focus on quality and service excellence for patients. The role also involves facilitating challenging situations and appropriately assigning workloads to optimize staff performance. In addition to overseeing daily operations, the Assistant Nurse Manager is responsible for monitoring and maintaining staff performance. Nursing leaders in this role are expected to model excellent attendance, a positive attitude, and respectful communication, while embodying Hartford Healthcare's Core Values of Excellence, Safety, Caring, and Integrity. Responsibilities

  • Direct the work in the Psychiatric Emergency Department to ensure safe and efficient patient movement.
  • Assign patient care activities and ensure staff qualifications for assigned patients.
  • Support team members and ensure quality and service excellence to patients.
  • Facilitate challenging situations and appropriately assign workloads.
  • Monitor and maintain staff performance, modeling excellent attendance and positive attitudes.
  • Promote a healthy work environment and role model HHC leadership behaviors.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a health-related field or a qualified candidate in the process of completing the education requirement within six months of employment.
  • Two (2) years of experience as an RN in a psychiatric behavioral health unit required; three (3) or more years preferred.
  • Six (6) months experience as Charge Nurse or supervisory experience required; twelve (12) months preferred.
  • Current Connecticut License as a Registered Nurse.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; ability to obtain and maintain Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications within 90 days of hire.
  • Demonstrated clinical knowledge to evaluate and prioritize patient flow issues.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree in health-related or business field preferred.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification and certification in clinical area preferred.
  • Leadership experience preferred.
