About the position

The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at Colgate University is seeking applications for a tenure-stream position in Chinese at the level of assistant professor, set to begin in the fall semester of 2025. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching Chinese language courses at all levels, as well as departmental courses that align with their specialization. Additionally, the candidate will contribute to the Liberal Arts Core Curriculum and may oversee independent studies as required. A key aspect of this role includes directing a semester-long study abroad program to mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, which is rotated among faculty members. The teaching responsibilities will also support the interdisciplinary program in Asian Studies and may extend to other interdisciplinary programs at Colgate, depending on the candidate's areas of interest and expertise. The teaching load is set at five courses per academic year, and faculty members are expected to engage in productive scholarly research, provide student advising, and participate in service to both the University and the broader academic profession.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in hand or near completion.
  • Native or near-native command of both Chinese and English.
  • Specialization in pre-twentieth-century Chinese literature and culture.
