About the position

The Assistant Professor of Composition (Commercial Music) at the Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University, is a tenure-track position aimed at fostering creativity and professional development in media scoring and popular songwriting. The role involves teaching, curriculum development, and leading the commercial music program while engaging in industry partnerships and interdisciplinary collaborations.

Responsibilities

  • Engage in creative and professional activities, including building industry partnerships and producing new work for commercial applications.
  • Teach courses and lessons in music composition, focusing on songwriting and/or scoring for film, television, video games, and online media platforms.
  • Assess current curriculum offerings and develop a new commercial music program.
  • Serve as the administrative leader of the commercial music program, reviewing and revising curricula in media scoring and music production.
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Engage in service activities within the Department of Music, the university, and the music composition community at large.
  • Participate in committees, student advising, and other departmental responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Master's degree or equivalent professional experience in Media Scoring, Music Technology, Music Composition, or a related field.
  • Significant professional experience in songwriting or scoring music for media (film, television, online media, or video games).
  • Fluency in digital audio workstations, notation software, sound libraries, studio recording, and other relevant technologies.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and create a dynamic educational environment for diverse students.

Nice-to-haves

  • Teaching experience at the college/university level.
  • Professional experience with audio post-production (editing, mixing, mastering).
