About the position

At Dollar General, the Assistant Store Manager plays a crucial role in maintaining a clean and well-organized store with a strong focus on customer service. This position is designed for individuals who are eager to contribute to a team-oriented environment while ensuring that customers receive the best possible service. The Assistant Store Manager works under the direction of the Store Manager and is responsible for supervising store employees, managing merchandise presentation, completing necessary paperwork, and preparing deposits. This role also involves performing stocking and cashiering functions, as well as other duties that maximize profitability and customer satisfaction while safeguarding company assets and minimizing losses. The Assistant Store Manager is expected to provide superior customer service leadership by greeting and assisting customers, operating the cash register, and ensuring that the store is open and closed properly at least two days a week. This position requires assisting the Store Manager with employee scheduling, training, conducting safety meetings, and ensuring compliance with company policies and procedures. The Assistant Store Manager will follow company processes to manage merchandise, which includes receiving, unpacking, stocking, restocking, and rotating products on shelves, as well as building merchandise displays. In addition to inventory management, the Assistant Store Manager will assist in maintaining accurate inventory levels by controlling damages, markdowns, and ensuring proper scanning and paperwork. They will also help implement and maintain planograms, ensuring that merchandise is presented according to established practices and Store Manager direction. Financial integrity is a key responsibility, which includes strict cashier accountability, key control, adherence to security practices, and cash control procedures. The Assistant Store Manager will authorize and sign for refunds and overrides, count register tills, and deposit money in the bank. In the absence of the Store Manager, the Assistant Store Manager will assist in managing the store effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Provide superior customer service leadership by greeting and assisting customers.
  • Operate cash register and scanner to itemize customer purchases.
  • Open and close the store a minimum of two days per week.
  • Assist Store Manager with scheduling employees and providing adequate training.
  • Conduct safety meetings and ensure employee compliance with company policies.
  • Manage merchandise processes including receiving, unpacking, stocking, and rotating products.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate inventory levels and control damages and markdowns.
  • Implement and maintain planograms as directed by the Store Manager.
  • Ensure financial integrity of the store through cashier accountability and cash control procedures.
  • Count register tills and deposit money in the bank.
  • Assist with management of the store in the Store Manager's absence.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
  • One year of experience in a retail environment preferred.
  • Six months supervisory experience preferred.
  • Effective interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of situations.
  • Good organization skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as diagrams and procedures manuals.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and percentages.
  • Knowledge of cash handling procedures and facility control policies.
  • Ability to drive own vehicle to the bank for deposits.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a fast-paced retail environment.
  • Familiarity with cash register functions and generating reports.
