About the position

This Non-Tenure-Track (NTT) Assistant Teaching Professor position is a faculty member role within the Department of Biology, part of the College of Science at Northeastern University. The successful candidate will serve as the full-time faculty representative for the Bioinformatics Master's (MS) program at the Toronto campus. The role requires a strong foundation in bioinformatics, as the faculty member will be responsible for teaching courses at the MS level and ensuring a positive educational experience for students. The position also involves opportunities for course and curriculum development, as well as interactions with prospective students and bioinformatics industry experts, depending on the applicant's skills and preferences. The NTT faculty member is expected to teach five courses and provide one equivalent unit of service to the College. This service requirement will include administrative duties such as recruiting part-time faculty, advising students, and building local industry partnerships that are beneficial to the program. Teaching responsibilities may be adjusted based on program needs and the discretion of the Chair of Biology. The teaching duties encompass reviewing key teaching points within existing instructor guides, preparing lectures based on provided course materials, facilitating engaging discussions, timely grading of assignments, and maintaining consistent communication with students regarding their performance. Adherence to Northeastern's policies is also a critical aspect of this role.

Responsibilities

  • Teach five courses in the Bioinformatics Master's program at the Toronto campus.
  • Provide one equivalent unit of service to the College, which includes administrative duties.
  • Recruit part-time faculty for the program.
  • Advise students on academic and career matters.
  • Build local industry partnerships to enhance the program's value.
  • Prepare lectures based on course materials provided.
  • Facilitate respectful debates and discussions in both in-person and online classes.
  • Review and grade assignments in a timely manner, providing appropriate feedback to students.
  • Maintain consistent connection with students regarding their performance.
  • Adhere to Northeastern's policies and standards.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Cellular Biology, or a closely related discipline by the appointment start date.
  • Strong commitment to teaching excellence at the university level.
  • Excellent communication skills to interact productively with students, faculty, staff, and industry partners.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and familiarity with effective teaching practices and curriculum development preferred.
  • Experience within the bioinformatics, computational biology, or related industry preferred.
