About the position

The Associate Director of Data Governance at Denison University will play a pivotal role in shaping the institution's data-driven future. This full-time position is situated within the Controller's Office and is responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of comprehensive data governance policies, standards, and processes. The successful candidate will collaborate with both business and technical teams to ensure the quality, integrity, and security of data across the university. This role is crucial as Denison transitions to the Workday system, which is currently being implemented. The Associate Director will be tasked with developing robust and systemic data tools that will enhance data utilization throughout the organization, fostering a culture of data-driven decision-making. Additionally, the role involves integrating existing campus systems over time to create a unified data repository for the university. The Associate Director will be responsible for leading data governance initiatives and driving continuous improvement efforts. This includes developing and implementing a data governance strategy that aligns with the university's strategic objectives, ensuring that data governance policies are adhered to, and maintaining the data dictionary. The role requires close collaboration with various teams, including the Data Management and Analytics Group, Business Intelligence, and Institutional Research, to address cross-divisional reporting and data needs. The Associate Director will also ensure that the central data repository maintains data integrity for accurate reporting and analysis, develop best practices and standards in data processing, and cultivate productive relationships with campus leaders to leverage data in support of strategic initiatives and student success. Furthermore, the Associate Director will be responsible for developing policies and procedures for data governance, security, and compliance with relevant regulations. Documentation of processes and policies will also be a key responsibility, along with performing other duties as assigned. This position is a five-year appointment, running through December 31, 2029, unless otherwise extended.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a robust data governance strategy that aligns with the university's strategic objectives and supports the transition to Workday.
  • Convene and lead the Data Strategy Committee, overseeing the development and implementation of data governance policies, ensuring data quality, and maintaining the data dictionary.
  • Work closely with the Data Management and Analytics Group, Business Intelligence, Institutional Research, and teams from multiple divisions to address cross-divisional reporting and data needs.
  • Ensure the central data repository maintains data integrity for accurate reporting and analysis by developing and implementing necessary processes.
  • Develop and implement best practices and standards in data processing, design, definitions, architecture, and operations.
  • Cultivate productive relationships with campus leaders to leverage data in supporting strategic initiatives and student success.
  • Develop policies and procedures for data governance, security, and resilience on campus, and ensure compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Maintain and share documentation on processes and policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • 3-5 years of proven experience in data governance, data management, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in data management and data policy.
  • Strong understanding of data architecture, data modeling, and data warehousing concepts.
