About the position

The Associate Director of Gift Finance at the University of Michigan is responsible for overseeing all gift-related revenue to Michigan Medicine. This role involves ensuring compliance with various guidelines and policies, managing a team, and collaborating with multiple departments to honor donor intent and optimize fund utilization. The position also includes developing policies and procedures for gift finance operations and providing expert guidance on compliance matters.

Responsibilities

  • Hire, train, and supervise three team members; plan and direct work assignments, monitor performance, conduct performance reviews, and continuously coach staff to maximize potential.
  • Develop and communicate Gift Finance policies/procedures for Michigan Medicine Development, including for cash handling, fund minimums and requirements, reconciliations, financial transfers, and reporting.
  • Evaluate work assignments, procedures, and systems and update as necessary to maximize gift finance operations efficiency and accuracy.
  • Serve as the MM Development expert on federal tax reporting requirements such as PCI compliance, IRS, CASE and Standard Practice Guide (SPG) guidelines, and other university policies and requirements; make decisions regarding compliance and educate stakeholders.
  • In partnership with the Director of Stewardship and Gift Finance and the Medical School Finance Office, develop and document a comprehensive gift fund management process manual, establishing standards and workflows to support annual audits and a complex array of fund management scenarios.
  • Provide oversight to ensure the process is followed.
  • Review annual audit on gift fund utilization status.
  • Research funds and donors to understand giving histories and intentions.
  • Guide departments, units, and Finance on appropriate next steps to spend down gift balances while honoring donor intent.
  • Compile and deliver regular reports detailing progress toward enhanced fund utilization, including analysis of trends, challenges, and opportunities for optimization.
  • Liaise with colleagues at UMH-Sparrow and UMH-West to support the integration of regional offices and three development databases; collaboratively create policies and processes that support regional fundraising efforts in compliance with current U-M policy and gift and event guidelines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • At least 3 years of progressively responsible finance/accounting or gift fund processing experience, preferably in a fundraising environment
  • Strong communication skills, including a high level of comfort with providing feedback to employees, communicating university policy, and presenting complex information to groups
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, as well as a high level of sophistication and maturity in social and professional settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop good working relationships with internal and external constituency groups and to work collaboratively with colleagues in a team environment.
  • Ability to exercise a high degree of sound judgment and diplomacy, with a commitment to confidentiality.
  • Ability to work flexible hours with occasional weekend and evening work as necessary.

Nice-to-haves

  • At least 1 year of supervisory experience
  • Development experience in an academic health system setting with a comprehensive development program
  • Experience with DART or other similar donor management systems
  • Experience generating and analyzing fundraising reports
  • Knowledge of University of Michigan organization, policies, and procedures
