About the position

As an Associate Underwriter at W.R. Berkley, you will play a crucial role in the evaluation and pricing of commercial property and casualty insurance risks. This position requires you to accept, retain, and price standard to moderate risks in accordance with established underwriting guidelines and within your delegated authority level. You will partner closely with a lead underwriter within your assigned territory to achieve profitable growth objectives by accurately classifying and pricing risks while building strong internal and external business relationships. The company offers a hybrid work schedule, allowing for four days in the office and one day remote when appropriate. Your responsibilities will include evaluating renewal commercial property and casualty risks and endorsements by examining various factors such as business operations, classifications, contract forms, account information, claims experience, loss control surveys, and financial reports. You will determine pricing in accordance with established underwriting guidelines and prepare quotes or accept and price accounts that meet the risk selection criteria. Additionally, you will consult with agents for further information when necessary and maintain professional relationships with the agency force to encourage profitability and growth.

Responsibilities

  • Accept, retain, and price standard to moderate commercial property and casualty insurance risks in accordance with established underwriting guidelines.
  • Partner with lead underwriter within assigned territory to achieve profitable growth objectives.
  • Evaluate renewal commercial property/casualty risks and endorsements by examining business operations, classifications, and claims experience.
  • Determine pricing in accordance with established underwriting guidelines and within delegated authority level.
  • Prepare quotes or accept and price commercial property/casualty accounts that meet established risk selection criteria.
  • Consult agents for additional information when necessary and determine if accounts will be renewed or cancelled.
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with agency force to encourage profitability and growth.
  • Assist agents with questions regarding risk information and billing.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by management.

Requirements

  • 2+ years related work experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of underwriting principles and policy forms.
  • Ability to evaluate and recommend solutions to work-related problems.
  • Ability to analyze insurance risks to determine the degree of acceptability and pricing.
  • Customer service and teamwork oriented.
  • Strong desk management skills, ability to multitask, and prioritize competing demands.
  • Strong collaboration skills and teamwork minded.
  • Verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with all levels of internal and external contacts.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and company business systems.
  • Ability to travel occasionally in assigned territory.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associate's degree preferred.
  • Commercial rating experience desired.
  • Completion of or working toward AINS, AU or similar designation.
  • Demonstrates strong business acumen and critical thinking skills.
  • Intermediate knowledge of underwriting principles and policy forms.
  • Adept to fast-paced and changing environments.
