About the position

The Marion County Public Defender Agency is seeking an Attorney I to provide legal representation for indigent clients in various legal matters, including misdemeanors, civil contempt, and CHINS proceedings. This position is crucial in ensuring that individuals who cannot afford legal counsel receive effective representation in juvenile, misdemeanor, and appellate courts. The agency operates with a commitment to public service, focusing on liberty interests and providing comprehensive legal support to the community. The Attorney I will be expected to exercise independent judgment and decision-making skills, particularly in complex cases where policies and procedures may not be explicitly defined. The role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to make informed decisions quickly, often without the benefit of consultation. In this position, the attorney will appear in court to advocate for clients, conduct thorough legal and factual reviews of cases, and engage in pretrial motion practice. Responsibilities also include consulting with clients, interviewing witnesses, and collaborating with experts to build strong cases. The attorney will negotiate with opposing counsel to reach favorable case dispositions, which may involve plea agreements or trial proceedings. Maintaining open communication with clients and their families is essential, as is the ability to delegate tasks to paralegals and investigators when necessary. The Attorney I will work closely with social workers to develop multi-disciplinary strategies aimed at achieving the best outcomes for clients. Confidentiality is paramount in all interactions and case management activities.
