About the position

The New York State Comptroller's Office is seeking candidates for the position of Auditor 1 Abandoned Property, SG-18, Auditor Trainee 2 Abandoned Property, SG-16, and Auditor Trainee 1 Abandoned Property, SG-14. This position involves performing monthly audits and reconciliations of the Office of Unclaimed Funds (OUF) securities accounts held by the contracted custodian. The auditor will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy of account balances, auditing corporate distribution transactions, and preparing financial statements in accordance with governmental standards. The role requires effective communication with various stakeholders and the ability to resolve discrepancies efficiently.

Responsibilities

  • Perform monthly audits and reconciliations of the Office of Unclaimed Funds (OUF) securities accounts.
  • Determine beginning balances of security positions and verify ending balances.
  • Audit liquidation, redemption, dividend, income, and reinvestment of corporate distribution transactions.
  • Gather transaction data and summarize security sales in tabular format.
  • Develop audit samples conforming to statistical sample methodology.
  • Perform comparisons to independent data sources to ensure transaction accuracy.
  • Communicate regularly with OUF's custodian to resolve discrepancies.
  • Perform monthly reconciliations of cash accumulated within the OUF securities custody account.
  • Assist reporters of abandoned property with questions regarding the reporting of securities.
  • Prepare the OUF's Financial Statements for the State Fiscal Year in accordance with GASB standards.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree including or supplemented by 24 undergraduate or graduate semester credit hours in accounting and/or auditing.
  • For Auditor Trainee 2, one year of professional accounting and/or auditing experience is required.
  • For Auditor 1, two years of professional accounting and/or auditing experience or a master's/doctorial degree in relevant fields with one year of experience.
