About the position

Sompo International is seeking an Assistant Vice President, E&S Casualty Underwriter to join our team in either our Los Angeles or Irvine, CA office. This position reports to the Senior Vice President, E&S Casualty and is a unique opportunity for a seasoned professional in the insurance industry. The successful candidate will be part of our U.S. Excess Casualty - E&S team, which is known for its expertise and creativity in completing placements. Our team leverages strong relationships with appointed wholesale brokers to provide meaningful capacity, a consistent underwriting approach, and timely coverage and claims responses. In this role, you will be responsible for underwriting lead and excess liability business in accordance with Sompo's established processes, procedures, business philosophy, and appetite. You will evaluate individual risk characteristics to determine capacity, attachment points, terms, and pricing effectively. Maintaining and enhancing existing relationships with wholesale brokers is crucial, as is the ability to identify and develop new relationships both regionally and outside your territory. You will also adapt underwriting techniques to align with underwriting guidelines and rating plans, allowing you to write a wide range of account sizes and operations. Additionally, you will develop and execute a marketing plan aimed at retaining existing business and producing new business, while collaborating and cross-selling with other lines of business within Sompo. This position offers a competitive salary range of $110,000 to $180,000, with actual compensation depending on various factors including cost of living, qualifications, skills, competencies, and relevant experience. Responsibilities

  • Underwrite lead and excess liability business in accordance with Sompo's processes and procedures.
  • Evaluate individual risk characteristics to determine capacity, attachment point, terms, and pricing.
  • Maintain and enhance existing wholesale broker relationships.
  • Identify and develop new relationships both regionally and outside the territory.
  • Adapt underwriting techniques to underwriting guidelines and rating plans.
  • Develop and execute a marketing plan aimed at retaining existing business and producing new business.
  • Collaborate and cross-sell with other lines of business within Sompo.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of casualty underwriting experience.
  • Strong established relationships with regional wholesale brokers.
  • Bachelor's Degree from a four-year College or University.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • CPCU designation and/or Surplus Lines license preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a leadership role within underwriting teams.
  • Familiarity with various underwriting software and tools.
