About the position

BorgWarner is seeking a qualified individual to support the scientists and engineers in Battery and Charging Systems at our Propulsion Technical Center (PTC) in Auburn Hills, Michigan. This person will work under the direction of the Battery Materials Lab engineers and will be required to perform a wide variety of testing and analysis associated with material selection and root-cause failure analysis. This position will provide opportunities to expand analytical and problem-solving skills as well as contribute to the development of new analytical methods and techniques that can be applied to various materials (polymers, metals, ceramics, composites, lubricants, and adhesives). The individual will work alongside scientists and engineers to support research and development projects for new products. They will also provide product launch support and quality control to manufacturing sites. Additionally, they will perform failure analysis of field return components from internal testing and customers.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the scientists and engineers with adhesive validation testing and data processing.
  • Provide support root-cause failure analysis investigations for battery cells and modules, as well as foundational friction products (as-needed).
  • Manage time between supporting a variety of testing and analytical projects to ensure deadlines are met successfully.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a bachelor's degree (BS/BA) in materials engineering, materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, engineering chemistry, or mechanical engineering.
  • Ability to operate laboratory test and analysis equipment typically used in material investigations.
  • Familiarity with safe lab practices and chemical safety.
  • Ability to multi-task efficiently.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Motivated and able to work independently or in a team-oriented environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with microscopy (optical and SEM).
  • Familiarity with polymer and organic material testing (FTIR, TGA, DSC, GC-MS).
  • Familiarity with surface metrology and roughness measurements.
  • Familiarity with tensile and compression testing.
  • Familiarity with corrosion and material compatibility testing.
  • Knowledge of battery systems and materials preferred but not required.
