About the position

The Benefits Analyst at Kinder Morgan plays a crucial role in managing and overseeing the company's benefit plans, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and providing exceptional customer service to employees. This position involves conducting annual benefit plan audits, managing reconciliations, and collaborating with various stakeholders to ensure accurate reporting and administration of benefits. The role offers a hybrid work schedule, allowing for a combination of in-office and remote work.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and drive the calendar for the annual reporting for the Kinder Morgan Savings Plan 11-K.
  • Oversee the third-party preparation of annual reporting (audits/government filings) for all other benefit plans (pension, health & welfare, flex benefits, etc.).
  • Coordinate with actuaries to provide necessary trust-related information for the annual measurement and reporting under ASC 715.
  • Review actuarial reports, assumptions and experience and analyze results.
  • Review year-end fair value testing of assets and assist with preparation of 10-K disclosures.
  • Perform monthly account reconciliations for all G/L benefits-related accounts.
  • Manage employee benefits trusts and perform monthly and annual reconciliations.
  • Maintain an up-to-date understanding of DOL laws, SEC rules and FASB pronouncements that affect annual reporting along with SEC, FERC, GAAP and other regulatory filings.
  • Prepare financial analysis and special studies including presentation of results and findings to management.
  • Provide support of the company's qualified benefit plans administration.
  • Prepare and submit weekly/biweekly 401k contributions to ensure timely and accurate funding transfer.
  • Take ownership for the resolution of complex employee inquiries and questions ensuring timely, accurate and value added responses.
  • Assist with the company's financial wellness programs including the coordination and execution of education and awareness campaigns.
  • Develop communications to facilitate clear understanding of benefits plan provisions to ensure employees take full advantage of Kinder Morgan's various company-sponsored benefits.
  • Assist with the preparation and execution, in concert with legal consultation, benefits documentation such as original and amended plan documents and SPDs.
  • Assure regulatory and policy compliance for all programs, to include supporting audits, discrimination testing, notifications, plan amendments, and tax applicable filings.
  • Develop key insights on current employee benefits processes and develop process improvements and standard methodologies.
  • Assist with fiduciary committee meetings including recommending agenda topics, reviewing draft minutes and preparing meeting materials.
  • Represent benefits team in various initiatives across the HR organization.
  • Maintain a high regard for personal safety, for the safety of company assets and employees, and the general public.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Human Resources, Accounting or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years of benefits, human resources or accounting experience.
  • Demonstrated analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to identify and resolve complex issues.
  • Attention to detail and strong problem solving skills, including logical thought processes and the ability to resolve complex issues.
  • Ability to oversee projects and processes with many elements from beginning to end.
  • Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Excel for the purpose of developing and analyzing data on spreadsheets and data retrieval.
  • Intermediate level proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to interface and communicate effectively in a clear concise manner with internal and external customers, managers, vendors, consultants and legal professionals.
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellent customer service.
  • Excellent and creative writing skills necessary to develop presentations and communications.
  • Possess authentic listening skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to successfully and simultaneously manage multiple tasks, meet multiple deadlines and work with limited direct supervision.
  • Ability to organize, schedule and prioritize departmental and individual work to meet various schedules and objectives, reprioritize on short notice.
  • Ability to work with all levels of internal and external personnel, and maintain strict confidentiality.

Nice-to-haves

  • MBA or other related Master's degree
  • SHRM-CP/PHR or CEBS certification
  • CPA or actuarial firm experience
  • Strong knowledge of U.S GAAP
  • Advanced knowledge of retirement plans, investments, benefits accounting and/or actuarial practices
  • Experience working with union benefit plans
  • Experience with Lawson financial software, particularly the G/L and HR modules
