About the position

Under the supervision of certificated staff, the Bilingual Instructional Aide assists in regular classroom and/or supplemental instruction of Limited-English Proficient (LEP) students (English Learners) performing a variety of regular and/or supplemental instructional duties. The position requires maintaining non-certified status until 45 hours of District ELD (English Language Development) inservice time is completed.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the teacher in motivating, disciplining, instructing and supervising students.
  • Assist the teacher in the identification/redesignation of students.
  • Assist the teacher in instructional tasks by working with the individual child and small groups of children.
  • Work with specialized instructional materials after inservice is given by appropriate staff.
  • Assist in the preparation of teaching materials and learning activities.
  • Correct and grade tests and records results.
  • Complete documents required for program activities.
  • Assist in maintaining a neat, orderly and attractive learning environment.
  • Assist with parent contacts by telephone or in person serving as an interpreter as required.
  • Operate various office equipment (typewriter, computer, copy machine, etc.).
  • Meet regularly with teachers and/or certificated support staff to plan program activities and review materials and assignments.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of general academic needs of LEP students (English Learners).
  • Knowledge of cultural background and lifestyle of LEP students (English Learners).
  • Knowledge of correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of second language proficiency.
  • Ability to pass all components of the District bilingual test.
  • Ability to agree to completing a District approved inservice program on English Language Development (ELD) techniques (45 hours).
  • Ability to perform routine clerical tasks.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Ability to participate in inservice education, conferences or formal classes related to assignment.
  • Ability to show initiative when working independently with children or using materials.
  • Ability to demonstrate reading, math, writing and language proficiency on an appropriate District test.
  • Ability to effectively relate to children in a bilingual/bicultural setting.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in working with people of a variety of cultures is desirable.
