About the position

The Biomedical Electrical Technician (Shared Services) in Clinical Engineering at Dartmouth Health is responsible for a variety of tasks related to the installation, service, and calibration of a wide range of therapeutic and diagnostic biomedical instrumentation. This role is crucial in ensuring that medical equipment operates safely and effectively, contributing to the overall quality of patient care. The technician will work with mechanical, pneumatic, electrical, and basic electronic devices, performing routine electrical, safety, calibration, and functional tests using specialized test equipment. In addition to technical skills, the technician will support a systematic preventive maintenance program for biomedical instrumentation, documenting all maintenance requests, actions, special initiatives, and testing procedures in the Clinical Engineering Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) according to established documentation standards. Diagnosing and correcting system and equipment malfunctions is a key responsibility, which may involve making component or assembly replacements and calibrating systems to meet specified requirements. The technician will also provide technical assistance and instruction to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health (D-HH) personnel regarding the operation and setup of equipment, utilizing schematics, wiring diagrams, technical drawings, troubleshooting guides, and manufacturer literature. The position requires a willingness to serve as a technical resource in areas of specialty or certification and to be available for on-call duty as needed. Strong communication and customer service skills are essential for success in this role, as the technician will interact with various stakeholders within the healthcare environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assembles, installs, and maintains mechanical, pneumatic, electrical, and basic electronic devices.
  • Performs routine electrical, safety, calibration, and functional tests on biomedical instrumentation using test equipment.
  • Supports a systematic preventive maintenance program of biomedical instrumentation.
  • Documents all maintenance requests, actions, special initiatives, and testing procedures in the Clinical Engineering CMMS per documentation standards.
  • Diagnoses and corrects system and equipment malfunctions by making component or assembly replacements and calibrating systems to ensure compliance with specified requirements.
  • Provides technical assistance and instruction to D-HH personnel in the operation and setup of equipment.
  • Utilizes schematics, wiring diagrams, technical drawings, troubleshooting guides, and manufacturer literature of biomedical instrumentation.
  • Serves as a technical resource to others in areas of specialty or certification(s).
  • Willingness to serve 'on-call' duty as required.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 2 Expertise Units Required, defined as 1 per year of biomedical equipment technician work experience, 1 per two years of relevant technical or clinical work experience, 3 per relevant Associates Degree or Military Equivalent, and 5 per relevant Bachelor's Degree.
  • Basic knowledge of electronic circuitry and troubleshooting.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Flexible schedule preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a clinical engineering environment.
  • Certification as a Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET) or similar.
