About the position

The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) is seeking two Biomedical Engineers to serve as Program Directors in two distinct divisions: the Division of Applied Science & Technology (DAST) and the Division of Health Informatics Technologies (DHIT). The Program Director for DAST will focus on Image-Guided Interventions, while the Program Director for DHIT will have expertise in Point-of-Care technologies and Digital health. This role is pivotal in advancing the practices, techniques, and knowledge within the medical and biological sciences, particularly in the realm of biomedical engineering. As a Program Director, you will be responsible for the management of biomedical engineering research, which includes the research and development of new medical devices and the innovative application of existing devices. You will provide technical leadership and guidance in your area of expertise, ensuring that program needs are identified and formulated to achieve an integrated and responsive effort. Your role will also involve conducting scientific and administrative reviews of applications and proposals, advising on the selection of consultants, and ensuring a thorough scientific evaluation process. In addition to these responsibilities, you will organize and conduct workshops, conferences, and symposia to facilitate communication among researchers and to advise on the progress and emerging directions of research. This position requires a strong foundation in engineering principles, as well as the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders to drive the goals of the organization forward.

Responsibilities

  • Perform professional engineering and scientific program management to enrich practices, techniques, and knowledge in the medical and biological sciences.
  • Manage biomedical engineering research, including the development of new medical devices and new uses of existing medical devices.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance in a major subject matter area.
  • Identify and formulate program needs to achieve an integrated and responsive effort in the assigned area.
  • Conduct scientific and administrative reviews and analyses of applications/proposals and advise on the selection of consultants for fair scientific evaluation.
  • Organize and conduct workshops, conferences, symposia, or similar activities to foster communication among investigators and advise on research progress.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship or proof of being a U.S. National must be met by closing date.
  • A bachelor's degree in professional engineering from an ABET-accredited school or equivalent qualifications as specified in the job description.
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service, including tasks such as creating and improving designs for healthcare devices and evaluating trends in biomedical engineering research.
