About the position

The University of Michigan's Department of Radiation Oncology is seeking a Senior Biomedical Engineer to specialize in the design and production of patient-specific components and research prototypes. This role involves collaboration with medical physics and clinical faculty to enhance treatment delivery and patient safety through innovative engineering solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop prototype components for clinical applications.
  • Collaborate with Medical Physics and Clinical faculty to design and produce patient-specific components in-house, primarily using 3D printing, laser engraving, or CNC routing.
  • Evaluate and recommend resins and materials for biomedical compatibility and engineering requirements.
  • Advise on the purchase of 3D printers, rinse and curing equipment, and CAD software.
  • Participate in training workshops on 3D printers and biomedical modeling software.
  • Develop prototype components for research applications in collaboration with RadOnc faculty and their research partners.
  • Evaluate and recommend materials to meet specific engineering requirements for research components.
  • Print 3D components on demand and perform post-processing tasks.
  • Dispose of toxic waste products according to guidelines.
  • Perform maintenance and repair on 3D equipment.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field of science or engineering.
  • 3-5 years of professional experience in biomedical engineering or a related field.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience with 3D design and manufacturing.
  • Experience with CAD or DICOM software.
  • Familiarity with University of Michigan research and clinical protocols.
