About the position

Under general supervision, the Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET) provides a vital link between technology and patient care across various settings, including surgical and intensive care units, diagnostic and therapeutic treatment units, clinics, laboratories, and medical equipment distribution areas. The BMET is expected to support a wide variety of medical devices utilized at an academic medical center, in alignment with the Clinical Technology & Biomedical Engineering Medical Equipment Management Plan. This role is crucial in ensuring that all assignments are completed within the department's performance standards, contributing to the overall quality of patient care. The BMET is responsible for complying with the Department Technician Orientation & Training Competency Program and actively participating in continuous education and training. This includes documenting all scheduled and unscheduled work performed in the Clinical Technology & Biomedical Engineering inventory and maintenance database. The technician must adhere to all safety guidelines and infection control policies, ensuring the well-being of patients, visitors, and employees. Additionally, the BMET is tasked with maintaining confidentiality regarding hospital business and HIPAA compliance. The role may require providing weekend, holiday, and off-shift coverage, including emergency call-back services. The primary responsibility of the BMET is to provide technical support in handling specific logistical activities in defined support areas, functioning as a team member within a workgroup. The technician will also provide technical bedside support for routine and emergency trouble calls, demonstrating the ability to assess priorities and escalate more complex issues to appropriately trained staff. Understanding and adhering to the Hospital's Conflict of Interest policy is also a critical aspect of this position.

Responsibilities

  • Complies with Department Technician Orientation & Training Competency Program and actively participates in continuous education and training.
  • Documents all scheduled and unscheduled work performed in the CT&BE inventory and maintenance database.
  • Follows all SH&C/LPCH safety guidelines and infection control policies and procedures for self, patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Handles hospital and department computer workstations, software packages, websites, and files with appropriate care and respects all copyrighted material.
  • Maintains confidentiality with regard to hospital business and HIPAA compliance.
  • Provides weekend, holiday, and off-shift coverage, including call-back emergency coverage as needed.
  • Provides technical support in handling specific logistical activities in defined support areas.
  • Provides technical bedside support for routine and STAT/emergency trouble calls while assessing priorities and escalating more difficult tasks to properly trained staff.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in a work-related field/discipline from an accredited college or university.
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve routine, specialized, and advanced technology problems.
  • Ability to foster effective working relationships and build consensus.
  • Good dexterity and strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to solve problems and identify solutions.
  • Ability to speak and write effectively at a level appropriate for the job.
  • Ability to work well with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area.
  • Knowledge of electrical theory and related safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of new technologies in specific field and maintain updates.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification as a Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET) or similar.
