About the position

The Biomedical Engineer position at the Department of Veterans Affairs is located in the Healthcare Technology Management Service of the Durham VA Health Care System. The role serves as a staff advisor to the Chief of Healthcare Technology Management Service, focusing on biomedical engineering principles and practices. The engineer will manage medical equipment programs, ensure compliance with healthcare standards, and provide education and support to clinical staff regarding medical instrumentation.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting an equipment management program that meets current The Joint Commission (TJC) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) requirements.
  • Assuring the provision of a continuing education program for clinical staff addressing the principles and application of medical instrumentation used in healthcare delivery.
  • Managing a recall and safety alert program for medical devices, including incident investigations to ensure compliance with patient safety goals and regulations.
  • Advising clinical and administrative staff on medical engineering technology, including existing and emerging technologies.
  • Assisting with capital asset and infrastructure planning for medical equipment from initial concept to implementation.
  • Functioning as the subject matter expert in biomedical engineering, supporting specialized clinical technology including service, system administration, training, and quality assurance.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Engineering from an accredited institution, or certification as a Certified Clinical Engineer (CCE).
  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level, or completion of a post-doctoral research fellowship in biomedical engineering.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with medical device management and compliance with healthcare standards.
  • Knowledge of computer-based medical systems and information security as it applies to medical technology.
