About the position

The Blue Ring Ground Software Architect position at Blue Origin is a senior role focused on developing and guiding the software architecture for mission operations and safety-critical systems in support of space exploration. This role involves collaboration with various engineering teams to ensure the successful implementation of software solutions that meet the requirements of on-orbit vehicles, while also mentoring a team of software developers. The architect will play a crucial role in shaping the future of space missions and ensuring the safety and efficiency of operations.

Responsibilities

  • Architect, design, implement, test, verify and deploy mission operations, safety-critical software systems.
  • Guide the development and implementation of operations software and ground system infrastructure.
  • Perform trade studies to develop software tools in-house, adapt existing software, or purchase software to perform a particular function.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to define software requirements, architectures, and designs.
  • Coordinate with mission system engineers to plan, develop, and lead system verification and qualification.
  • Produce documentation for software architecture, design, verification plans, user manual and training material.
  • Support mission control software operations responsibilities during operator training and spacecraft integration.

Requirements

  • B.S. or higher degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, aerospace engineering, or related field or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years of software development experience including production software development.
  • Experience using tools such as DoDAF, UML, C4 Model, Software Design Patterns.
  • Strong understanding of the principles and methods of engineering complex systems.
  • Proven software development skills in C/C++ and Python.
  • Experience in software build automation, continuous integration, configuration management, verification, and deployment.
  • Expertise in real-time flight operations, mission planning, flight planning, and operational fault management.

Nice-to-haves

  • Active TS/SCI clearance.
  • Experience designing and developing software for space flight operations.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code and Cloud Technologies.
  • Experience with communications protocols for space applications (e.g. CCSDS, DDS, etc.).
  • Familiarity with system safety analyses techniques including Functional Hazard Assessments (FHA), Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analyses (FMECA), and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA).
